One of the first questions we ask when we are given a property to manage is, who is handling the utilities? We pay the bills for the owner, to make sure everything stays working as it should for the tenant, but it a little bit of a hunt when seeing who is doing the gas, water, and electricity. Thankfully, due to the monopoly of electricity by Southern California Edison-who is doing the electricity is already answered. All we can do is pay the bills, Southern California Edison keeps up their end of the bargain by providing power to your rentals and maintaining their lines. But what is one to do in case of an emergency?
Besides, letting us know what is going-to see if there is anything we can do to help you get your power back, here are some suggestions:
1) Register at sce.com/outagealerts to receive outage alerts. You can choose how you are notified (text, email, or phone call).
2) Place flashlights in handy locations around the house, and make sure the batteries are checked every so often. Yes your phone has a flashlight built into, but you should save the batteries on your phone-you don't know how long the power outage is going to last.
3) Save important phone numbers on your phone and in your home. Good phone numbers to have on hand would be your local fire department, police, hospital, doctor, and relatives.
4) Have back up batteries for your phone. You will need to use your phone but do not know how long you need to rely on your battery for. There are plenty of options for devices you can charge and then use to charge your phone.
5) Learn how to manually open your automatic garage doors and gates. Anything automatic has to have a manual way to use, don't get locked in your house if you need to leave just because you can't open your automatic gate.
6) Have a plan. Don't open up your fridge or freezer, and figure out where you and your family go in case the outage goes on longer than you expected.
