Last week we spoke on how to prepare for an electricity outage, but do you know there are different types of outages? Let's learn a little bit about this.
1) Rotating Outage
These are rare, but if there is a statewide emergency, there will be controlled power outages to ease the demand on the overall electrical grid. I am sure you have gotten notice in the mail for when it hits your neighborhood before.
2) Public Safety Power Shutoff
During wildfire season, in high fire-risk areas-electricity will be turned off to help the safety of the customers and the public.
This is a great opportunity to talk about when people in general lose power in their homes. I will use an example from my own home. We have a home office and most the plugs being plugged in are in this one room. There are times something is plugged in or unplugged and that single plug was just too much and the whole house all of a sudden has no power. Here is what we suggest doing first when this happens:
- Have one person at the breaker and one person in the house. Be able to communicate with one another.
- The person at the breaker would start to flip the breaker switches one by one, and the person inside the house would start flipping switches in the room to see if there is power in that room.
- Go room by room until you get to the room where the power blew. Once you find the room that blew and flip the switch, you should be back to power in the whole house.
It is easy to forget that we are living in these homes built in the 60's and 70's with wiring and breakers most likely for those times with modern technology and electricity use. When you are not using something, try to have it unplugged and be wary of how many devices need to be plugged in to be used.
