Emergencies happen, and sometimes they happen with water. When I say water emergency, I don't mean drinking water-I mean the water you use to shower and wash dishes. Here is what to do when disaster strikes.
First and foremost, it is important to discover where your main water shut-off valve controls are, it is usually located near the water meter, inside the water meter pit. When disaster strikes, turning the main water off is going to be your first step. We often see the shower or dishwasher being the source of leaks.
Next step would be to clean up any water as soon as possible, most floors can handle some water but it is when the floor gets beneath the floorboards and into padding/bases that you get the more expensive repairs. After this, notify your property management line and show photographs of what is happening. Because you have turned off the water, nothing water powered will work and your manager will work promptly to get the water back on.
On our end, we are looking at the insurance and contacting them-as well as calling our restoration company to make sure that we don't have any mold or other issues that can happen when there is resting water. The next week or so will be a lot of remedy and scheduling with the people doing said repair. It is as busy for you as it is for management, we not only have you the tenant to look out for but also the owner of the home you are residing in.
Join me next week as we talk about Gas.
